Mathieu Palombino has drawn the curtains on Chez Jef, his pop-up restaurant in the old Bowery Diner space. The paper is up on the windows and a sign on the door promises a September return. Chef Jef initially offered a limited three course prix fixe menu of classic French fare such as steak frites, but over the course of time the menu expanded significantly with daily blackboard specials such as pâté de campagne. Palombino, who also owns Motorino, says that the restaurant will return as a full-blown French bistro.
The restaurant is being completely revamped, with furnishings coming from France. Palombino is also importing a charcutier from France to help with the expanded menu, that will feature an extensive charcuterie program. Additionally there will be a full menu featuring 10-12 mains as well a concise wine list featuring around 50 bottles. The restaurant will also be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner when it debuts in the fall.
