The gentrification punches just keep coming for Union Square. Local standby University Pita, the last remaining food spot in the original Bowlmor building has shuttered, and it won't be reopening. On the other side of the square, Chat 'N Chew, has also shuttered after 20 years in business. The inexpensive soul food spot was a dive, but had many fans, including Eric Asimov, who sang the praises of the fried chicken and the turkey dinner in the Times back when the restaurant opened.
But in better news, Japonica, which also closed to make way for the luxury condos headed to the space, now has signage up at its new location at 90 University Place, which happens to be the place where the restaurant originally resided until it moved to the bigger location at 100 University Place back in 1991.
