Max Fish soft opens this weekend on Orchard Street, just blocks from where the legendary bar/art space originally stood (now occupied by Sweet Chick). Owner Ulli Rimkus was forced to close the 23-year-old bar almost exactly a year ago due to a rent hike, but managed to find a two story space nearby.
Rimkus tells DNAinfo that she doesn't want the new place "to be a Max Fish museum," but she's held on to many of the bar's most familiar knick knacks, including the cigarette that hung outside (now inside) and the pool table (which won't be installed until they knock out the back wall). The ground floor opens Saturday, although the basement level won't be ready until the fall. The food menu is also still in the works, but for now the restaurant is letting patrons bring in their own food.
