On Friday Jonathan Morr of BondSt and Eugene Morimoto opened Cherry Izakaya, their first Brooklyn restaurant in Williamsburg. The Izakaya is meant to be a somewhat toned down version of their swanky French-Japanese spot Cherry in the Dream Downtown hotel, but it is still plenty swanky, particularly by neighborhood standards. The double level space was put together by design team hOme and has a large arched bar with stool seating, Japanese inspired floor tiles, and loads of mirrors, plus a couple walls hand painted to look like traditional Japanese woodblock prints. The menu is a mix of various Japanese traditions including yakitori skewers, cold and hot zensai, and gyoza. A handful of larger plates include soy chicken, a chef's choice sushi plate, and pork ramen with brown butter miso and corn. The team also plans to start brunch in about a month.
