Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery Plans First Brick-and-Mortar Shop

Paul Crispin Quitoriano

Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery, a favorite of Pastry Cases, Tom Colicchio, and even Oprah, is going brick-and-mortar later this year in the West Village. The bakery, which now sells its products at Intelligentsia Café and 'wichcraft will turn out baker Umber Ahmad's stellar brownies, cream scones, brioche doughnuts and presumably more. Ahmad is currently raising funds through a Kickstarter campaign, which still has six days to go but has already passed its goal of $20,000. The bakery is named for the Urdu phrase that describes something magical or the element of a food or a moment that makes it special, explains Ahmad. Charlotte Druckman calls it "emotional umami."
