The building at 100 University Place (AKA the Bowlmor Lanes building) is being torn down to make way for a new development. Several businesses on the block, like Stromboli and Viva Le Crepe, have already closed, and in a few weeks sushi favorite Japonica will also shutter, but not for good. The restaurant is actually going to relocate to a space nearby at 90 University Place.
This storefront was actually where Japonica got its start back in 1978, when it was one of the city's first sushi restaurants. After 13 successful years in business, it moved to the bigger location up the block in 1991, where it has had a great run until now. According to managing agent and resident Jon Posner, the landlord at 90 University originally did not want a restaurant in this space, but he changed his mind when he found out that Japonica might be moving back to its original home.
