The Arepa Lady's Restaurant is Now Open in Queens

The original Arepa Lady cart: Foursquare/Jose S.

The legendary Arepa Lady of Jackson Heights opened her brick and mortar restaurant over the weekend. Owner Maria Cano has operated her food cart on Roosevelt Avenue on weekend nights for decades, and her arepas have earned a large a dedicated following, but this is her first venture into the full-time restaurant business. Her children are helping to run the new business, and Cano will continue to operate her cart on seasonal Friday and Saturday nights. The menu of arepa toppings is expanded at the new place, which offers both seating and takeout, and Queens food expert Joe DiStefano reports that the arepa de choclo is "as good as ever" there.
