Charlie Palmer's group is planning a new project in the lobby of the Lipstick Building on 54th Street called Crimson & Rye. Palmer has tapped Luis Mendez, formerly of the Mercer Kitchen, to helm the bar. The drinks menu will include classics, original cocktails, limited production bourbons, craft ales, a wide selection of sparkling wines, and a handful of house-made ginger beers. The food menu from chef Stefan Bahr will have shareable small plates like warm corn pancakes with caviar, plus oysters, charcuterie, and cheeses. The restaurant will also serve carved meat plates, and other more formidable entree items. Palmer tells Eater: "The menu is constructed around things that I really want to eat. "
Crimson & Rye will have an oval-shaped bar and seating for about 70 people in a cozy space lined with leather armchairs, antique rugs, and burnished woods. Palmer explains: "What we're trying to accomplish is to transport you from the Midtown big glossy marble buildings into this little cocoon that makes you feel like you've gone somewhere, like you're in a different place." If everything goes according to plan, Crimson & Rye will open on July 7. Later this year, Mr. Palmer will also open a trio of restaurants in the Knickerboker Hotel.
