When the news broke yesterday evening that Wylie Dufresne will close his trailblazing 11 year-old restaurant, wd~50, the restaurant world reacted with shock (although it's not entirely a surprise), sadness, and remembrances. Eater has reached out to Dufresne for details, but the chef has not yet elaborated on the reasons for the closure, or whether there are plans to relocate the icon of modern cuisine. Last night a representative for Dufresne told the Times that the chef was not ready to give further explanation just yet. But while waiting on more news, here's a roundup of reactions from the Twitter universe. Also don't forget that there are still a good six months to try that 12-course tasting menu.
In the future we're going to realize wd-50 was the CBGB of this era, with way nicer bathrooms.

The Musket Room's Matt Lambert:
@pete_wells some people already realize this present day As a foreigner moving to NY I was most excited and inspired by @wyliedufresne in 06

Sorry to hear WD-50 is closing. Here's my 3-star review from ancient 2003 when Clinton St was "rough" http://t.co/UfJkxUloKL via @nypost

Without WD-50, would Sam Mason have opened Tailor or @oddfellowsNYC? Would @AlexStupak have opened Empellon?

Esquire writer Tom Junod:
I loved the high-wire act at WD-50. But when I profiled Wylie Dufresne he scrambled eggs a la Big Night, and that's what I always remember.

And finally, an important reminder from food writer Charlotte Druckman:
why're ppl behaving as though WD-50 or Wylie Dufresne is DEAD? the restaurant's still open right now & the chef's not turning in his knives.
