A new team has moved into the old Sapporo East space on First Avenue with plans to reopen the corner storefront as a Japanese restaurant called Beronberon. EV Grieve reports that Yuji Umeki, a manager at nearby Kenka, is one of the principals at this new project. Umeki and his crew plan to serve a menu that's similar to the one offered at Sapporo East. Over the weekend, workers painted over Chico's "Love Mother Earth" mural, which had adorned the southern exterior of the space for a long time. Word on the street is that the new owners will install windows along this wall.
After 30 years in business, Sapporo East mysteriously shuttered in January along with its sister establishment Shima on Second Avenue. Head over to EV Grieve for pics of the renovation.
