The Pavilion, the long-in-the-works restaurant in the embattled Union Square Pavilion, opens for dinner tonight. Restaurateur Simon Oren of the 5 Napkin Burger chain signed on to the project back in 2011, when the Parks Department was already deeply entrenched in a fight over its right to operate a private restaurant in the space. After getting the final go-ahead, he initially hired Wayne Nish as executive chef, but Nish has since left the project.
Now Mario Urgiles, formerly of Maison, is the chef in charge of the menu, which includes all the market-driven standards. There are a couple of crudos, a kale Caesar salad, short rib ravioli, moules frites, and a roasted chicken with potatoes and broccoli rabe. Eventually there will also be market day specials on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, when the Union Square Greenmarket is open. Check out the full menu below. The restaurant opens tonight for dinner, with lunch coming soon.
