Status: Opening Tonight

After delays, anticipation, and more delays, the brand new Tavern on the Green opens for dinner tonight. The restaurant, which originally opened in 1934, has been closed to the public since 2009. Philadelphia-based restaurateurs Jim Caiola and David Salama have cleaned up and toned down the legendary Central Park restaurant, replacing gaudy crystal with dark wood.

From an open kitchen outfitted with wood-fired ovens, grills, and planchas, chef Katy Sparks is turning out a market-driven New American menu, with dishes like pork chops with wood roasted rhubarb and fennel, quail with grits, chorizo, and roasted grapes, and baked farro pasta. For now it's dinner only, with lunch and brunch coming in mid-May. Take another look at the menu below, and please send any and all reports our way.
