Take a look around Heartwood, which Gramercy Tavern alum Nick Mautone opened last night in the old Donatella space. (Donatella Arpaia is still a partner in the new project.) The Stefano Ferrara pizza oven is no longer gold plated, but it is still very much in use, now in the hands of Daniel's former bread baker, Mark Fiorentino. He turns out unusual pizzas like one called "When Peter Luger Goes Out for Pizza," topped with braised short rib, creamed spinach and horseradish.
Bradford Thompson, formerly of Lever House and Miss Lily's, is in the kitchen handling the other half of the menu, which includes dishes like fried skate fingers with jalapeno tartar sauce, and mustard crusted rabbit leg with cranberry beans and braised escarole.
