The Greenwich Village location of BLT Burger has shuttered after a six year run on Sixth Avenue. BLT Burger made its debut back in 2008 during the height of the burger boom, when a spate of dedicated burger restaurants opened in New York City. West Coast sensation Umami Burger, which opened a few blocks away last year, might have had an impact on BLT Burger's fortunes.
BLT Burger's parent company ESquared Hospitality has retained the lease, and it plans to convert the space into a new restaurant called Horchata. A press release promises that this will be "a fresh new Mexican eatery." ESquared continues to operate BLT Burger locations in Las Vegas, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and the company also runs Go Burger, a similar restaurant on the Upper East Side. No opening date has been announced for Horchata.
