Finally, after being delayed again and again and again, the newly revamped Tavern on the Green has settled on an opening date later this month. Philadelphia restaurateurs Jim Caiola and David Salama plan to unleash the newly restored Tavern on April 24, and have already started taking reservations.
The restaurant, as previously reported, is less than half the size of the original, and somewhat less ostentatious. It includes a bar room and two dining rooms, plus a 300 seat courtyard and an outdoor bar. The main dining room has an open kitchen outfitted with hearth ovens, grills, and planchas. This space is enclosed in a glass cube overlooking Central Park, inside what used to be the Crystal Room. Although nothing's available online yet, the Times describes the the menu from Katy Sparks as American and "ingredient-driven," and often heavy on the vegetables. The "Green to Go" window on the side will also serve sandwiches, drinks, and snacks.
