Mathieu Palombino closed his two-year-old restaurant The Bowery Diner last week, with plans to turn it into a brand new, as yet unnamed project. Until the chef launches that new restaurant, he's doing a pop-up, of sorts, in the space called Chez Jef.
The menu includes bistro staples like French onion soup, pâté de campagne, steak frites, and crème brûlée. All of the dinner entrees are $22, many of the wine bottles are under $50, and the restaurant is offering a three-course prix fixe for $35. If a French bistro menu sounds like a stretch for Palombino, remember that he spent time in the kitchens of Bouley and BLT Fish before he launched the Motorino restaurants and The Bowery Diner, and he also helped launch Prima on East First Street.
Chez Jef is now open from 11 a.m. till midnight Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. till 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Check out the menus:
