Last Thursday night Questlove hosted a party at The Spotted Pig in honor of Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot. Bono was involved, as you might expect when the worlds of music, philanthropy, and international politics collide.
Questlove voiced concern about throwing a fancy party for performers whose ethos is focused on economic and social equality. The musician tells the Wall Street Journal: "it seems like the very thing their movement would be against: the hierarchy of glamour and privilege." But that didn't stop the influx of celebrities: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Marina Abramovic and even Jemima Kirke of Girls who was spotted, chain smoking and laughing at a rabbi saying the word "pussy."
The guests of honor spent most of the party in a back office, only emerging to make a short speech. They didn't even come out to eat, requesting that desserts be brought to them. Photos of the star-studded event can be found over on Brooklyn Vegan.
