Mile End's Noah Bernamoff is teaming up with Matt Kliegman of The Smile to open a wood-fired bagel shop in Nolita next month. Bernamoff had started making Montreal-style bagels at Mile End's Red Hook commissary kitchen before Hurricane Sandy destroyed that facility, but the duo tell Grub Street that the bagels at Black Seed will be good old New York-style.
The shop at 170 Elizabeth Street will have an open kitchen, so customers can watch the bagels being handrolled, boiled, and baked in a wood-fired oven. Bernamoff and Kliegman plan to sell sandwiches and salads as well, and to make their own cream cheese, along with a number of smoked fish and vegetable spreads. If all goes well, Black Seed should open by the end of March. It will be mere blocks from the other big bagel project announced this week, Baz Bagel and Restaurant, from Rubirosa GM Bari Musacchio.
