JBFA Semifinalists & Women; Levine & Isidori Team Up

AWARDS SEASONDid the James Beard Awards include more women chefs in the 2014 semifinalists list than in previous years? Yes, and no. Every year since 2009, women have made up 20 percent of the semifinalists in the chef categories. But this year, there are eight women in the Outstanding Chef category, which is a 40 percent increase from last year. Head over to Eater National for a full statistical analysis of the gender breakdown, with graphs. [Eater National]

SOHONightlife man/restaurateur Matt Levine is opening a new restaurant at 528 Broome Street called Chalk Point Kitchen. The chef is Joe Isidori, formerly of Arthur on Smith. Isidori describes this new place as "Chinatown meets the Union Square Greenmarket." The new restaurant will have an adjacent piano bar called Handy Liquor Bar. This is the space that formerly housed Tailor, Lani Kai, and The Dalloway. Chalk Point Kitchen and its adjacent bar will open next month. [Grub Street]

KNISHWIREGabila's, Long Island's biggest knish company, has been out of action since last fall, when the factory caught on fire. But now the damage has been repaired and the factory will reopen next week. Katz's had to take knishes of the menu. Apparently, the restaurant sold about 2,000 a week. [JDF]
