Mathieu Palombino will close his two-year-old French-American restaurant The Bowery Diner after service on Sunday, Freburary 23. Next month, Palombino will reopen the space as a pop-up called Chez Jef, and later this year, he will open a brand new restaurant in the space. The chef tells Eater:
We will change the space into a very different restaurant in the spring, but before renovations begin we will operate a pop-up restaurant called "Chez Jef" open Sunday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to midnight and until one on Friday and Saturdays. We expect the Bowery Diner to be closed about a week before Chez Jef opens to the public. The menu for Chez Jef includes bistro staples like French onion soup, beef tartare, steak frites, and mussels mariniere.
Although The Bowery Diner certainly had its fans, it never received the critical acclaim of Palombino's Motorino restaurants. No word yet on what type of restaurant Palombino has planned for the space next, but it would be exciting to see him open a proper French establishment, or a steakhouse.
UPDATE: Palombino offers a few more details: "This is the same team here, nothing has changed. We're anticipating to run Chez Jef for two to three months, the day at which we will be ready to start the new restaurant is still a moving target at this point. Chez Jef will be very simple but hopefully fun."
