This Sunday, legendary Red Hook sub shop Defonte's is opening a second location in the most unlikely of places: Staten Island. The shop's opening in the Stapleton neighborhood, which owner Nicholas Defonte tells DNAinfo, "reminded me a little bit of Red Hook many years ago before it got built up [as] it is now." It's a big move for the shop, which hasn't changed much since it opened in 1922. The family tried their hands at a Manhattan outpost in 2009, but when a developer bought the building, they retreated to Red Hook earlier this year. Expect the Staten Island location to be very similar to the original with an almost identical (Robert Sietsema approved) menu. Even the bread will be carried over the Verrazano daily for the enormous subs. 95 Water Street, Stapleton, Staten Island
