Renowned British chef Jason Atherton will open Social on Madison in May of next year, reports Bloomberg. The restaurant is a partnership with big box restaurateur Stephen Starr, and will be located in Ian Schrager's forthcoming Marriott Edition Hotel, at 701 Seventh Avenue. Atherton, who worked for Gordon Ramsay for almost a decade before striking out on his own in 2010, currently runs six restaurants in London, most notably the Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social, as well as seven restaurants across Asia.
Atherton rose to prominence at the Gordon Ramsay-owned Maze in London, where he earned a Michelin star as chef. He went on to open several outposts of the restaurant throughout the world. But he plans a more low key entrance into NYC than the one his former boss made with Gordon Ramsay at The London, which opened with a big splash in 2007 and has has now ignominiously shuttered. "I’m a one-star chef who loves his job and loves to cook" Atherton tells Bloomberg, claiming he is not looking to build a three star restaurant.
