Sugar Couture Goes Brick and Mortar; Rocco's Tacos to Bring 420 Tequilas to Brooklyn

Welcome to the weekly Plywood Report. This week, yet another matcha bar is in the works, plus there will soon be two new places to buy tacos.


East Williamsburg: Custom cake baker Penny Stankiewicz, who counts Tony Bennett, John Mayer, Hugh Jackman, and Adele among her clients, is working on her first Sugar Couture retail space at 386 Graham Avenue. There will be bacon jam croissants, soups, savory foccacia with daily toppings like short rib and broccoli rabe, and slices of cakes that come in flavors like lemon ginger with strawberries and passion fruit buttercream. Gringa Taqueria


West Village: Bushwick taco spot La Gringa Taqueria is opening its first Manhattan outpost at 82 Christopher street. Taco options will include pulled pork, chicken, tilapia, and sweet plantains. There will also be burritos. [DNAinfo]

Downtown Brooklyn: South Florida-based mini chai Rocco's Tacos & Tequila Bar is finishing up work on its first Brooklyn location. The bar will offer 420 tequilas (the largest selection in the Northeast). The menu is a mix of tacos on house-made flour or corn tortillas and larger plates like Jalapeño rellenos. Cha Lait


West Village: Cha Lait (which is pronounced "chalet") is planning to in an old Lite Choice space in Sheridan Square. The shop will focus on fancy matcha, tea, and espresso. In addition to selling drinks, it will also sell its own branded matcha powder to go. [PLYWOOD]

East Village: Sweet Generation, a baking company that raises money for arts education recently signed a lease a cupcake shop at 130 1st Avenue. [PLYWOOD]

NoMad: Healthy fast-casual chain Exki recently signed a lease for its second New York location at 28th Street and Madison Avenue. [PLYWOOD]
