One more piece of breaking news from the community board files this afternoon. Dimes, the tiny California-style cafe loved by beautiful people and Robert Sietsema alike, looks like it could be expanding. A new liquor license application listed on Community Board 3's December agenda indicates that something called Dimes Superette is taking over 49 Canal Street. Eater has heard murmurs of a new project from the Dimes team before, so it's entirely likely that this superette is just that.
49 Canal Street is currently home to Cochinita Dos, the recent offshoot of Clinton Hill taco spot Cochinita. An employee at the shop this afternoon did not know anything about an impending closure, but Eater has reached out to management as well. Eater has also reached out to the team at Dimes, and is still waiting on a response. Bowery Boogie, which also caught wind of the application, was told that "nothing is officially worked out," by Dimes owner Sabrina DeSousa. In any case, if this is indeed what it appears, it's clearly still in the earliest stages.
Update: Dimes co-owner Sabrina DeSousa tells Eater: "Out of respect to the seller, at this point we don't want to announce anything until negotiation is finalized." Stay tuned.
