Fresh off of the news that Torrisi will be closing to make way for a more intimate dining project, a tipster tells Eater that Major Food Group has settled on the old I Tre Merli space for their forthcoming appetizing shop with former Roberta's baker Melissa Weller. The Torrisi team has yet to confirm, but let's look at the evidence: A company registered as Major Dough Soho received Community Board 2 approval [link to PDF] for a liquor license back in September. If the word "Major" doesn't convince on its own, note that the application describes this new restaurant as "A full service American restaurant serving Jewish NY Style fare at breakfast, lunch and dinner." Which lines up awfully nicely.
Partner Jeff Zalaznick has called this project, "our version of Barney Greengrass." Weller started building a following and insane lines at her Smorgasburg stand East River Bagels, but stopped baking them when word dropped that she would go brick and mortar with the Torrisi boys. The bagels made their first appearance in about a year at a stand called Sadelle's at this year's San Gennaro festival. In September Zalaznick told Grub Street in that the shop would also be named Sadelle's, for his great-grandmother. Stay tuned for more details as the become available.
