There are changes afoot in the EMM Group's Meatpacking District empire. After a four-year run, owners Eugene Remm and Mark Birnbaum have closed SL, their basement club in the former Lotus space, as of New Year's Eve. This shutter follows the re-vamping of the old Abe and Arthur's above SL into the oh so hot Mexican restaurant La Cenita, and according to Remm, the company is just starting to work on the next concept and vision for what the space can be, and that it was simply time to start over. There is no timetable for when the space may reopen.
SL fit the bill when it first opened as an intimate lounge with high end service, but the movement in nightlife recently has been much larger projects like Marquee, Output, Sankeys, and EMM's own Finale on the Bowery that can host larger DJs and shows mixed with traditional bottle service. The Miami branch of SL remains open.
