William Tigertt and Taavo Somer Shutter Peels

William Tigertt and Taavo Somer have decided to close Peels, their two-and-a-half-year-old Bowery charmer. A rep for the restaurant tells Grub Street that the duo decided to turn the restaurant over to the landlord. In a statement, the owners note: "We've had a great run and thank all of our staff, the neighborhood and customers for the years of support and memories." The restaurant served breakfast this morning, but now it's closed.

When rumors of its impending closure surfaced last week, Tigertt told Eater: "At this time there is no agreement to sell Peels or close the restaurant." Several reliable sources tell Eater that Josh Pickard and Andrew Carmellini are planning a casual Italian restaurant in the space, similar to Locanda Verde. Pickard's camp had no comment on the rumor. A new, unnamed team filed a liquor license application for the space, so expect more details on the new project after next month's CB3 meeting.
