Mee Noodle Shop, an affordable Chinese restaurant that was beloved by Allen Ginsberg and many other East Village dwellers, made its triumphant return to First Avenue on Sunday night. The shop hummed along for 13 years on the corner of First and 13th Street until the building burned down in 2006. It was replaced by a shiny condo with a Starbucks on the ground floor, but in an unexpected twist, the original owners of Mee took over a space a few doors up the block last fall. EV Grieve reports that the restaurant had a packed house on opening night. The landlord that brokered the deal presented the owners with a painting of Ginsberg to hang in the dining room.
