Industry titan Stephen Starr is planning to open two New York restaurants this year: El Vez in Battery Park City, and an untitled meat-centric restaurant with Joe Carroll on the Bowery. If everything goes according to plan, Starr hopes to open the former in April. The team hasn't announced the name of the chef at El Vez yet, but the menu should be similar to the one served in Philly, so expect regional Mexican specialties, a few non-traditional Mex-American dishes, and six — count 'em six — types of guacamole. The original location has a blinged-out low rider bike behind the bar, and lots of shiny gold booths. EL Vez will be located at 259 Vesey St, right next door to Blue Smoke, and right across the street from the monster Brookfield Place development. This will be Starr's third time bringing a Philly restaurant to NYC, after Buddakan and Morimoto.
As for the Bowery restaurant, expect affordable steaks like the ones that are served at Joe Carroll's St. Anselm in Williamsburg, plus a few dishes in the vein of Fette Sau. Starr's team hasn't finalized an opening date or name just yet. Carroll and Starr previously collaborated on the Philly outpost of Fette Sau.
