Wildwood, BR Guest's big box barbecue restaurant, will close after service on Sunday night. A receptionist confirms that the restaurant is shuttering for good.
Wildwood was, at one point in time, one of Steve Hanson's most popular New York restaurants. It opened to generally solid reviews back in 2008, but the buzz died down over the years, as more serious barbecue restaurants starting popping up throughout the city. Wildwood always faced stiff competition from Blue Smoke and Hill Country, two nearby barbecue restaurants that have dedicated fan bases. It's actually surprising that the restaurant lasted this long, but maybe Steve Hanson was hanging onto it for personal or sentimental reasons.
The restaurateur split with BR Guest — which he founded in 1990 — at the end of the year. One source tells Eater that a rent hike is to blame for the closure, or maybe new boss James Gersten took a look at the numbers and decided to shut it down. Wildwood fans have three more nights to pay their lasts visits to The Full Hanson's barbecue baby.
