Trattoria Il Mulino, the more casual offshoot of Il Mulino New York, opened earlier this month in Gramercy. Il Mulino has been rapidly expanding its empire from the clubby, upscale original Downtown to include locations in Vegas, Chicago, Miami and Tokyo among other cities, and the group has already opened trattoria offshoots for both Il Mulino Atlantic City and Il Mulino Orlando. Owner Jerry Katzoff tells Fork in the Road that the idea behind the Trattoria spinoffs "is to attract a younger, more price-sensitive crowd," than the original. That means the "average price ranges from $40-$55," whereas the dishes at Il Mulino New York can top out around $80. Trattoria Il Mulino also sports a bigger bar, and it will feature live entertainment on the weekends.

Il Mulino New York's executive chef, Michael Mazza also developed the menu for Trattoria Il Mulino, and while there's no real overlap between the two, the menu at the new spot "is driven by Il Mulino." It includes a bar menu of antipasti and raw bar selections, pizzas, pastas, a large variety of grilled seafood, and some classic Italian entrees like veal parmigiana. On the weekend the restaurant also serves brunch, with dishes like eggs benedict with smoked salmon and caviar and sausage ossobucco.
