Michele Iuliano, the pizzaiolo behind Ovest, Da Mikele, and Luzzo's, is on the brink of expanding his pizza empire with both a Brooklyn location and a kosher pizzeria.
His first venture into Brooklyn, Luzzo's BK, will open in Brooklyn Heights next week, provided that everything goes according to plan. The menu will be a list of pizzas quite a lot like the one at the original East Village Luzzo's. A representative says that the restaurant has been designed with Brooklyn in mind, and the team hopes that it will feel like a neighborhood pizza joint.
Meanwhile the kosher spot, Pizza Al Volo, is in the works now near Grand Central Terminal. It's the result of a partnership between Iuliano and real-estate moguls Alex Sapir, Paolo Zampolli, and Rotem Rosen. Zampolli tells the Post that he asked Iuliano to come up with a kosher version of his pizza so that he could "enjoy it with [his] partners who eat only kosher." He liked the result so much that he "decided to turn it into a big business," and says he hopes to eventually expand Pizza Al Volo into a chain.
Iuliano also has plans to open Bar Trenta, a cafe-by-day, wine-bar-by-night in Chelsea. That was originally slated to open this summer, but a representative says that work there has been put on hold for now due to construction delays and the other projects that are in the works.
