A tipster spotted this eviction notice posted in the window of the West Village location of Bien Cuit last night. According to the document, the landlord is petitioning Bien Cuit for over $44,000 in unpaid rent. The Christopher Street location was shuttered by a flood at the end of July, and has been closed ever since due to the extensive damage and "extremely elevated" levels of mold in the air. Now the future of the bakery is even more uncertain:
Owner Kate Wheatcroft says they are in talks with the landlord to work something out, but adds that she "doesn't have a lot of faith" that they'll be able to reopen there. If things don't work out, Wheatcroft tells Eater she still hopes to open another location somewhere else in the area. She and co-owner Zachary Golper have already started putting feelers out for the right spot in the West Village or the nearby edges of the East Village and Soho.
