The Soho House Team Begs Judge for Liquor License

New, 18 comments

The owners of Soho House and their legal representatives appeared before a judge yesterday for a waiver of the 500-foot rule, a necessary step if they are ever going to get the State Liquor Authority to approve a license for their proposed expansion project. The new club, now named Ludlow House, is opposed by the Community Board 3, local elected officials like Councilwoman Margaret Chin and State Senator Daniel Squadron, and NIMBYs like the LES Dwellers. But according to a detailed report on Bedford and Bowery, the Ludlow House team came prepared with some of their own supporters, including a member who uses the club as an office and praised her co-members, saying it helped her start her own business. When the judge asked about their plan to have DJs most nights, the Soho House attorney shot back that they are more like musical programmers and not something like you find at Fat Baby. What did Fat Baby ever do to you?

The case now goes on to the SLA, which will hear additional arguments and offer a ruling. Stay tuned!
