Deathwatched Latin American restaurant La Mar Cebicheria Peruana has closed after less than two years in business. This was the first and only New York location of a popular high-end chain owned by South American celebrity chef Gaston Acurio. The restaurant's OpenTable page is down, the website no longer lists the New York location, and calls to La Mar go straight to an answering machine. A neighbor tells Eater that the restaurant closed last Friday. All of the restaurant's fixtures and equipment were auctioned off on Monday.
Although a lot of critics liked the food at La Mar, almost everyone complained about the erratic service and bizarre dining room. Pete Wells dropped a goose egg on the restaurant. No word yet on who will take over the massive space, but industry sources whisper that some big names have already stopped by to check it out.
