Union Square Hospitality Group announces today that chef Gabriel Kreuther will be leaving The Modern in Midtown later this year. The chef plans to open his own restaurant without Danny Meyer's restaurant group in 2014. Kreuther has been at The Modern since its opening in 2005. Along the way, he helped the restaurant earn a coveted Michelin star, and two three-star reviews from the New York Times.
The Modern has not announced his replacement yet. From the official statement on the USHG site:
We will miss Gabriel and wish him profound success when he opens his own place. The Modern will now begin a search for its next Executive Chef, who will be charged with leading the next culinary chapter of a great restaurant. This leaves a huge position to be filled in one of Midtown's very best restaurants. No word yet on what type of restaurant Kreuther is planning next, but that will certainly be one of the big openings of 2014 — he's an incredibly talented chef.
