Watch a Film on Grand Luncheonette, Shuttered in 1997

New, 3 comments

Greasy Spoons Week is a great week to revisit this 2005 short video by filmmaker Peter Sillen about Grand Luncheonette, which gives a great glimpse of one of the last old businesses from the pre-gentrification Times Square. The hot dog counter on West 42nd was shuttered in 1997 after getting evicted as part of the Times Square redevelopment plan. Its owner Fred Hakim's father opened the counter in the '30s, and Hakim fought the eviction for two years before ultimately being forced to close. Hakim passed away last year at the age of 83.
