Members of the The Hold Steady, Spoon, The Wanted, and w/o are putting the finishing touches on Lake Street, a new bar with a Midwestern theme at 706 Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint. The bar is also owned by Stevie Howlett, the proprietor of Scratcher and Heathers in the East Village. The news comes courtesy of Bedford & Bowery, New York magazine's brand new blog covering the East Village, the Lower East Side, Bushwick, Greenpoint, and Williamsburg.
The musicians that are backing this bar all hail from the Midwest. Bobby Drake, of The Hold Steady, explains that it's partly inspired by the "kind of old-man divey but cool bars" that he and his cronies frequented in Minneapolis. Lake Street will serve Midwestern beers, brats, and hot dogs, and the bar will have a few TVs showing sports. It's slated to open later this summer.
