With Some Help, Sunny's Bar Could Reopen in June

A benefit concert at the Bell House last week raised around $12,000 for Sunny's Bar in Red Hook, which has been closed since Hurricane Sandy caused significant damage to the space. When asked about the benefit concert, proprietor Sunny Balzano told the Brooklyn Paper: "I have this thing about this bar where I never really felt like it was mine...I always felt like it belonged to all of us and by seeing everyone out there in that particular moment made me feel that it does in fact belong to all of us."

Balzano thinks that he can get the bar back open in June if he can raise enough money to fix the space. He estimates that the total repair work will cost around $80,000. Balzano and his team set up an IndieGoGo campaign to raise the rest of the money, but so far they're only up to $1,250.

Another Sandy victim, Nathan's Famous, caught on fire last weekend, although a spokesperson for the restaurant says that the damage to the space was minimal, and that it "will not affect the timing of ongoing renovations." The owners hope to reopen Nathan's before Memorial Day.
