As expected, Community Board 3 came out against the Soho House's planned expansion into the Lower East Side last night, with board members and neighbors concerned about the over-saturation of nightlife in the area and how a members-only club would fit into the neighborhood. There was also concern raised over a proposed roof deck area and how that may impact the residents that live next to the building.
The Soho House team spent months holding open houses in the building in an effort to convince the neighbors that they would be adding to the neighborhood in a positive way. But they were not able to convince the board's sub-committee and they were also not able to convince the full board last night. But as we all know, a community board's vote is in no way binding, and the Soho House team will now be able to go directly to the State Liquor Authority to plead their case. And with the amount of money that the club is putting into the project and their effort to work with the community, it's a safe bet that the club will be able to get its license this way and push forward with their expansion.
