After a seven-year absence, affordable Chinese food favorite Mee Noodle Shop is returning to the East Village. The building that housed the restaurant on the corner of First Avenue and 13th Street burned down in 2006. It was replaced by a shiny condo with a Starbucks on the ground floor last year. Today, an agent at Miron Properties sends word that the restaurateurs behind the noodle shop are taking over the old Birdbath Bakery space up the block, which was vacated just a few weeks ago.
Mee had a 15-year run on the corner of 13th Street and First Avenue. An agent from Miron Properties notes: "This was a win-win situation. The landlord knew the tenant and missed their food and the tenant knew the neighborhood and longed to return." Mee was always a hit with the students and old timers who lived in the area, and it was Allen Ginsberg's all-time favorite Chinese restaurant. Expect an opening in the next month or so.
