The East First Street location of Ukrainian staple Veselka closed up shop yesterday at 4 p.m. The shuttering of the restaurant does not come as a huge surprise, because it was always empty. Tumbleweeds. There was never a soul in the place, and those wrap-around windows made this clear to anyone and everyone that walked by.
Yesterday, the management posted the following message on Facebook:
Veselka Bowery wants to thank all of our old friends — and the new friends we made along the way — as we close our doors today at 4 p.m. for the last time.As EV Grieve notes, the owners tried to bring in customers by showing baseball games in the dining room, and offering free pedicab rides to the restaurant. There were great times and great food. Thank you for your unending support and thanks to the East Village community for being the best little town in the country's biggest city.
We're sorry to close, but it's not goodbye if we see you in our original Veselka :: Bece??a location, where the doors never close. Keep in touch!
