Earlier this month, news broke that the East Village hot dog stand Crif Dogs was in talks to start serving on Houston Street, in the vacant lot that formerly houses Billy's Antiques. Partner Brian Shebairo and company were going to park their truck the Crifmobile in the space?which has been vacant for over a year now. The Crif Dogs team was applying for a liquor license to sell booze there as well. Unfortunately, those plans are now off, so there will be no Chihuahuas or Philly Tubesteaks coming to the corner of Houston and Elizabeth.
EV Grieve talks to Shebairo, who's steaming about the failed deal with landlord Goldman Properties. According to Shehairo, Goldman wanted Crif Dogs to vacate the space in September and October, so that the landlord could collaborate with shoe company Kenneth Cole on an "arts event" during which they'd give out condoms and clean needles to the homeless. Goldmap reps reportedly told Shehairo this was part of the deal just yesterday, after months of planning and working with Noho's leading NIMBY Zella Jones to win over community support.
