The Flatiron District just lost a great no-frills pizzeria. A tipster sends in this photo of Maffei Pizza on 22nd Street. The windows are papered up, the phone line is disconnected, and the restaurant is listed as "closed" on its Yelp page. Maffei served an above average plain slice, a very good fresh mozarella slice, and a truly sensational grandma slice. On weekdays between noon and 2 p.m., the place usually had a line out the door.

The dining room got a fresh makeover not too long ago, but it looks like those cosmetic improvements couldn't save the business. No word yet on what will take its place, or if the Maffei team will open the pizzeria in another location. Last year, Maffei landed on Eater's list of 12 epic pizzas to eat before you die.
