CONEY ISLAND — The City Planning Commission endorsed Marty Markowitz's plan for an amphitheater and restaurant in the Coney Island boardwalk space that once housed Childs restaurant. As Browntstoner notes, the Community Board voted down his plan over the summer, but the Landmarks Commission approved it. Some neighborhood activists have complained that the $50 million could be spent to help Coney Island in other ways. When asked about the vote, Markowitz told the Brooklyn Paper: "I'm thrilled about it — thrilled...And I'm confident that they did not vote for it for any reason other than the good it will do to that part of Coney Island and its residents."
