A Meal to Support Simply Seafood at Abandoned Pier 17

Almost two months since the Pier 17 Mall shuttered, it is very much worth noting that Simply Seafood, a fish shack with a long history at South Street Seaport, still remains open in the otherwise gutted food court. The restaurant's lease isn't up until 2020, and father and son Jon and Joseph Demane are still waiting for a settlement from the Howard Hughes Corporation for all the losses incurred by the corporation's plan to demolish the mall. Until then the pair are doggedly slinging fried clams and fish and chips to anyone who makes their way through the mall's single unlocked door.

To celebrate that determination, New Amsterdam Market, which has been fighting long and hard to preserve and rehabilitate the Seaport and the Old Fulton Fish Market as a historic, public asset, is organizing a "Support Simply Seafood" gathering at the restaurant this weekend. Anyone interested in attending the event, which takes place on Saturday at 6 p.m., should email rsvp@newamsterdammarket.org for more details.
