The brand new McCarren Park ice rink opens to the public today, as does its concession stand Hanson Bros. Food, a collaboration between chefs Tyler Kord and Josh Cohen. The food is a mashup of the stuff found at Kord's No. 7 Sub shops and Cohen's Jimmy's Diner, with a menu of "crazy dogs" (aka well-topped hotdogs) and "melts" (aka hot sandwiches on pretzel bread). The options range from a hot brown dog with cheese sauce, bacon and tomato to a broccoli cuban to a pot roast sandwich made with brisket and sour cream potato sauce. There are also a few snacks like pumpkin seed brittle, and the obligatory skating rink hot chocolate dressed up with malted whipped cream and crushed whoppers.
The pair have enlisted Greenpoint standby Steve's Meat Market to make them a custom blend hot dog, and are also sourcing some ingredients from fellow locals Peter Pan Doughnuts and Acme Smoked Fish. Nothing on the menu costs more than the $8 price of admission to the rink. Check out the whole thing, below:
