Somer's Japanese-Canadian Sports Bar Coming Soon

New, 1 comment

Restaurateur Taavo Somer of Freemans and Isa reveals some details on the bar he's been working on in the basement of 8 Rivington. Right now the street level is home to Barbershop, a barber run by the team that once cut hair at Freemans Sporting Club next door. But at the start of the new year, Somer will turn that into Freeman's Sporting Club Barbershop and open up a casual, 14-seat "Japanese-Canadian sports bar" below.

The Observer describes the new place as an "intricately assembled man-cave of a curiosity," and Somer says there will be Japanese Izakaya-style snacks and Molson Ice in shatter-proof bottles. Taavo wants to call it Kilroe, but his business partner Kent Kilroe is not sure that he wants to have a bar named after himself.
