Gastón Acurio Hopes to Open Another Restaurant in NYC

New, 6 comments

Although his restaurant La Mar Cebicheria flopped on Madison Avenue, chef Gastón Acurio tells Eater National that he still wants to open another restaurant in New York City. Acurio says that he's looking "around Chelsea Market or maybe Brooklyn." Here's his take on why La Mar failed:

There are a lot of different reasons when you close a restaurant not just one. We had a huge space, a huge rent, so with the same amount of customers in another place, another spot ? We realized we needed to move to a place where we could recreate the same atmosphere we have in Lima: happiness, and joy, and loudness, and very casual.
So if you know any joyful, happy, loud spaces that would be the right fit for a casual cebicheria, give Gastón a call. Acurio also notes: "We need to be very close to New Yorkers to understand how we can manage and match our Peruvian food culture with the expectations of the local New York customers."
