Acclaimed Los Angeles chef/TV personality Ilan Hall plans to open a version of his popular restaurant The Gorbals inside the massive location of Urban Outfitters that's being built on North 6th Street between Wythe and Berry in Williamsburg. A reliable source sends word that the chef and the Urban Outfitters crew presented their plan before the CB1 at last night's SLA Review Committee meeting, and, in a surprise twist, the board voted to deny the application.
No word yet on just why, exactly, the CB1 members opposed the plan, but the full board will vote on the application next week. Hall recently revealed plans to open The Gorbals in Williamsburg, but he did not specify the location. Will New York embrace a trendy LA restaurant inside a massive chain store aimed at post-grad 20-somethings? Hard to say at this point, but The Gorbals has a strong reputation in LA, and everyone loves graphic tees and coffee table books about Betty Page.
In other CB1 news, the Parm application at 162 North 4th Street was postponed till next month. This may or may not be a new location of the Torrisi team's wildly popular sandwich shop.
